The maintenance technician performs skilled work in the installation, operation, maintenance, modificiation, service, and repair of mechanical, electrical, heating, ventillation, air conditioning, plumbing, and structural system of the University.

Essential Duties: 

  1. Makes daily inspections of mechanical rooms.
    1. Inspects mechanical rooms looking for potential problems.
    2. Repairs or replaces minor faulty equipment.
    3. Notifies supervisor of potential problems. 
  1. Peforms plumbing work
    1. Repairs or replaces existing plumbing fixtures, lines, pipelines, drains, valves, faucets, and elements of the plumbing system.
    2. Installs plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets, water heaters and connects them to outlet and inlet pipes.
    3. Opens clogged drains and stopped-up toilets.
  1. Performs electrical work
    1. Replaces faulty switches, sockets, plugs, fuses, breakers, insulators, and other elements of electrical systems, fixtures, and equipment.
    2. Installs new conduit, wiring, and electrical machinery.
    3. Inspects and tests electrical lighting, power circuits, and equipment.
    4. Maintains and repairs existing electrical wiring, equipment and installations. 
  1. Performs preventive maintenance to equipment and tools
    1. Performs manufacturer recommended preventive maintenance inspections.
    2. Follow established schedules and maintain proper documentation related to preventive maintenance work. 
  1. Follows standard safety precautions
    1. Complies with operator’s instructions for use of power tools.
    2. Wears protective gear such as goggles, hearing protectors, back supports, work gloves. 
    3. Reports incidents of unsafe work activity to supervisor. 
    4. Cleans and services tools and equipment as specified in operator's  manual.
    5. Reviews SDS sheets to ensure safe handling practices are used when working with hazardous materials. 
    6. Complies with Lockout/Tagout and Hot Works programs. 
  1. Maintain Campus
    1. Maintain interior and exterior of campus buildings as needed.
    2. Work with Grounds department to maintain exterior facilities to include bleachers, sprinkler/irrigation systems, drains, scoreboards, and other items as needed. 
  1. Works on-call on weekends and nights as assigned.
    1. Answers emergency and work calls on nights and weekends.
    2. Reports to work and performs necessary tasks while on-call.
    3. Makes decisions about work related problems while on-call. 
  1. Works on “cold patrol" during inclement weather
    1. Takes campus inspections looking for potential problems during cold weather
    2. Makes appropriate decisions to solve minor problems before they become serious problems.
    3. Helps grounds department with snow removal. 
  1. Maintains pools
    1. Tests swimming pool chemicals and makes adjustments as needed.
    2. Has and maintains a current pool operator’s certificate.
  1. Locates and purchases parts and supplies according to purchasing guidelines
    1. Locates parts quickly and effectively to prevent unnecessary down time.
    2. Keeps frequently used supplies on hand. 

Secondary Duties:

  1. Contributes to the overall success of the University /Facilities Management Department by performing other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Education and Experience

High school or GED + 2 years related experience and a valid driver's license.
