Transylvania University invites applications for an IT Systems Specialist. The Systems Specialist plays a critical role in managing macOS and Apple ecosystems, administering point-of-sale (POS) technologies, and supporting infrastructure and enterprise systems across the university. This position focuses on endpoint and Apple device management, system monitoring, and exploring emerging technologies that enhance IT service delivery and campus operations. The Systems Specialist works collaboratively across IT teams to implement secure, scalable, and reliable solutions aligned with institutional goals.

Essential Duties:

macOS & Endpoint Management

  • Administer, configure, and support macOS endpoints and Apple ecosystem technologies.
  • Manage device lifecycle through MDM tools (e.g., Jamf, Mosyle, Intune), including deployment, policy enforcement, and updates.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional security standards for Apple-based devices, including patching and encryption.

Point-of-Sale (POS) Administration

  • Manage and support POS hardware and software systems used across campus for retail and dining services.
  • Collaborate with functional stakeholders and vendors to ensure stable, secure, and PCI-compliant POS operations.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain connectivity, updates, and integration points with backend systems.

Enterprise Systems Monitoring

  • Monitor enterprise systems for availability, performance, and anomalies.
  • Collaborate with infrastructure and applications teams to escalate and resolve system alerts or outages.
  • Assist in maintaining system health dashboards, logs, and routine status checks.

Infrastructure Support

  • Provide support for servers, storage, virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware), and hybrid cloud systems.
  • Assist with VDI environments and endpoint readiness for remote and classroom computing needs.
  • Contribute to maintenance schedules, upgrades, and system documentation.

Emerging Technologies & Innovation

  • Research and pilot new technologies to support academic, administrative, or IT service innovation.
  • Develop recommendations for adoption based on testing, compatibility, and value alignment.
  • Participate in strategic initiatives to modernize the campus IT ecosystem.

Technical Support & Escalation

  • Provide Tier 2/3 support for macOS, POS systems, and infrastructure-related technical issues.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on Apple systems and endpoint optimization.
  • Document troubleshooting procedures, FAQs, and staff reference guides.

Collaboration & Documentation

  • Work closely with other IT teams to ensure cohesive system management and cross-platform functionality.
  • Maintain technical documentation for systems configuration, POS operations, and endpoint management.
  • Provide informal training to IT colleagues on macOS and related platforms.

Security & Compliance

  • Ensure endpoint and system practices align with university security policies and compliance frameworks (e.g., FERPA, GLBA).
  • Support identity management, secure access protocols, and data protection on Apple and POS platforms.
  • Assist with security audits, reporting, and remediation efforts.

Qualifications
Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • 3–5 years of experience in macOS support, endpoint management, or infrastructure administration.
  • Experience managing POS technologies and related hardware/software in a campus or retail environment.
  • Familiarity with monitoring tools and scripting languages (e.g., PowerShell, Bash, or Python).

Preferred:

  • Experience with virtualization (e.g., VMware), VDI platforms, and cloud technologies (e.g., Azure, AWS).
  • Knowledge of MDM systems such as Jamf, Mosyle, or Intune.
  • Background in higher education IT operations.
